Flowers are in bloom and kindergarten students at Battle Ground Elementary School are in awe of the bright colors and butterflies who visit their new outdoor learning area. The Public Schools Foundation of Tippecanoe County awarded the kindergarten teachers a grant to create the butterfly garden and outdoor classroom area. The Battle Ground Garden Club, Tippecanoe County Medical Society and Westfall Enterprises pitched in with donations and labor to help.
“The children have taken an active part in the planting and maintaining the garden areas,” explains teacher Lisa Goodman. “The plants allow us to attract butterflies so they will lay their eggs. We will be able to study the life cycle of the butterfly and have plants to feed them as we watch them grow.”
The school held a dedication ceremony September 10 that included comments from Principal John Pearl and Public Schools Foundation Director Christine Isbell. The children sang “One Small Voice” and recognized donors.
Goodman says the students are always eager to help water the plants, weed and sweep up around the garden.
