Kindergarten students get a jump-start on school

Some students are getting a head start on the school year at Kindergarten Countdown Camp. The free, half-day program is sponsored by the United Way of Greater Lafayette. Five TSC schools are hosting nearly 100 students who have little or no preschool experience.

Woodland Elementary School teacher Kari Frey says the children get to start their school experience with a gentle introduction of expectations and academics. “We work to make sure each child can write his or her name and understand the basic classroom expectations,” says Frey. “Sitting down and listening, how to use supplies, sharing with friends, raising their hand and lining up are examples of some of the skills we practice with the kids. We sing songs and read books about school and also identify important people the children can expect to see at school like the principal and bus driver.”

Battle Ground Elementary School teacher Lisa Goodman says her students work on classroom and school procedures, as well as social skills like cooperation, taking turns and resolving conflicts. “This program helps ease any anxieties they may have about coming to school for the first time,” says Goodman. “I want students to love and be excited about coming to kindergarten.”

The TSC Kindergarten Countdown Camp is from July 26-August 9. Students get a free backpack, school supplies and other items for participating in the program. The first day of school for TSC students is Wednesday, August 11.
