Two new clothes closets open at TSC schools

Burnett Creek Elementary School and Battle Ground Middle School are the latest schools to add donation closets to their buildings. The closets provide students in need with free coats, shoes, socks and other clothing and personal hygiene products.

ENL (English as a New Language) teacher Loralie Swan recently created the Creekside Care Closet at Burnett Creek thanks to support from Calvary church, local businesses, Burnett Creek PTO, school staff members and other donors.

Swan, an educator for more than 20 years, saw an increase in families who need support for basic needs. “During parent-teacher conferences last fall, I learned how the pandemic is impacting many of our families,” says Swan. “Some had lost their jobs. I could see a huge need.”

Before winter break, Swan called students down to her room to give out boots, gloves, coats and snow pants. “They were so grateful,” Swan says.

Battle Ground Middle School started the Tomahawk Community Closet after some parents in the community asked for assistance.

“Working with students, Special Education Aide Kelly Alt witnessed many students in need of clothing and hygiene products,” says BGM Principal Jodi Day. “Thanks to her efforts, the closet is now stocked with clothing that would fit most middle school students.”

Families wanting to access the closets should contact the schools. Anyone wanting to donate gently used items can also contact the schools for more information.
