Members of a Battle Ground Girl Scout Troop wanted to help foster friendships at school through buddy benches. They sold cookies and held other fundraisers to bring a bench to Battle Ground Intermediate. Fifth-grade student Baylee Wilson explains how a buddy bench works: "When someone sees a kid sitting on the buddy bench, they know that the kid is looking for a friend and can come sit next to them, introduce themselves, and get to know each other. Maybe they can play together."
A second bench was donated by Battle Ground school counselor Jeannine Jervis in memory of her mother, Delores Jervis, who passed away earlier this year. The second bench will be at the elementary school.
Fifth-grade student Alyssa Roller says many of the girls in the troop have been friends since kindergarten. "We hope that this buddy bench will help Battle Ground students feel more comfortable about being a good friend," says Roller.
A plaque on the bench says "The only way to make a friend is to be one."
